Trade , CO 2 , and the Environment ( Job Market Paper )

چکیده

This paper puts the gains from trade and the environmental costs of trade on the same theoretical and empirical footing in order to provide a more complete measure of trade’s welfare effects. To undertake this analysis, the paper describes a model of trade and the environment, compiles new data on the CO2 emissions from intranational and international shipping, and estimates the model’s key parameters using instrumental variables. Two key findings emerge. First, the gains from international trade exceed the environmental costs of international trade by two orders of magnitude. Second, a global carbon tax of $20/ton on the CO2 emissions from all air and sea shipping would decrease international trade by half a percentage point, increase global welfare, and have regressive incidence. Proposed EU and US taxes on the CO2 emissions from shipping increase unregulated CO2 emissions, divert trade to unregulated routes, and also have regressive incidence, but they too increase global welfare. ∗MIT Economics (email: [email protected]). Impact of Trade on Jobs

Workers’ Views of the Impact of Trade on Jobs Although public policy is influenced by the perception that workers worry about the impact of trade on their jobs, there is little empirical evidence on what shapes such views. This paper uses new data to examine how workers’ perceptions of the impact of trade are related to their career paths, job characteristics, and local labor market conditions....

CEP Discussion Paper No 1117 January 2012 Preferential Trade Agreements and the Labor Market

Labor market consequences are at the forefront of most debates on the merits of trade liberalization. Yet to date there has not been any attempt to study the...

Introducing Time-to-Educate in a Job Search Model Transition patterns from school to work differ considerably across OECD countries. At the same time, education is a time-consuming process, and enrolment and dropout decisions...

Dynamics of Intraindustry Trade and Labor-Market Adjustment

This paper investigates some dynamic aspects of the “smooth adjustment hypothesis” that is commonly associated with intraindustry trade (IIT). The analysis is conducted on a panel of plant-level employment data and industry-level production and trade data for Ireland. Rates of intraindustry job turnover are used as a proxy for labor-market adjustment. Three findings stand out. First, a measure ...

Trade and Wage Distribution Dynamics: When Does Trade Cause the Selection Effect?

This paper investigates when trade could cause the selection effect. Since the increased average real wage induced by trade triggers the selection effect in Melitz (2003), the main issue is the labor market conditions under which trade raises the average real wage. To identify the labor market conditions for the selection effect, this paper employs worker heterogeneity with respect to abilities...
